Students are required to complete the unit HLTAID004 Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting. FTTA does not provide this unit as part of the course.

Entry requirements

Attend an interview (phone or in person) and demonstrate suitability for the course.


Conduct play activities with children, cleaning tasks, care for children such as changing nappies.


Candidates will need access to a computer with an internet connection, basic desktop applications such as Microsoft Office or OpenOffice, a pdf reader, headphones or speakers. Some courses may require additional technologies.


Candidates will need basic computer skills to write simple documents, watch lectures and other such tasks.


Have language, literacy and numeracy skills to read and comprehend learning materials and perform tasks related to an AQF level 5 qualification which may include developing care routines, managing compliance activities, recording medication and health information, developing workplace policies and procedures, conducting hazard and risk assessments, preparing child development programs.


Be aged 18 years or over.


Candidates will need to obtain clearances as part of this course such as police checks and/or WWCC.


Australian Citizens, Permanent Residents, all visa types are eligible except student visa holders (note that not all visas are eligible for government funding however).

Classroom - Blended classroom, self-paced and work placement (classroom attendance 1 day per fortnight for 34 fortnights). Currently only available in Perth (Cockburn). Next intake to be advised soon.

External - Supported and structured pathway for approved applicants likely to be successful in an external mode.




74 weeks including orientation at the beginning and time at the end to finalise assessments. This course is expected to take approximately 1600 hours to complete. Students are initially enrolled for a 18 month period and can apply for extensions if required.




Face-to-face in a classroom setting combined with workplace visits and self-paced study. Access to modern online portal 24/7 which includes resources, toolboxes, pre-recorded webinars and videos.




Written Knowledge Assessment, Projects, Case Studies, Work Diary, and Workplace Observation.




Students must be working or volunteering at least 1 day per week for the duration of the program in an approved early learning service.
